The Unit was
raised on 19 Feb 1962 at Tezpur with four Mi-4 Helicopters. Sqn Ldr NK Gaikwad became the first
Commanding Officer of the unit in Aug 1963.

On 09
Mar 2011 the Helicopter Unit was honoured when the President, Smt Pratibha
Devi Singh Patil the Van Guards with the President's Colours at an impressive
ceremony held at Air Force Station, Bagdogra at the time Commanded by Wing
Commander GS Bhuller.
